Hier in Sydney habe ich ein paar Feiertage miterleben koennen. Leider berichte ich noch nicht ueber alle, kommt aber noch...

I was able to experience a few holidays here in Sydney. Unfortunately I do not list all, but soon...

Mardi Gras
Am 03.03. 2007 und am 01.03.08 war hier in Sydney Mardi Gras angesagt. Gegen Abend wird eine riesige Schwulen-Parade abgehalten. Ich wuerde mal sagen, diese Veranstaltung hat Aehnlichkeit mit dem deutschen Karneval. Viele bunte Kostueme, aussergewoehnliches Benehmen und hier und da Alkohol ;o)

Wir sind leider etwas spaet zur Parade gegangen und da es schon dunkel war sind die Fotos nicht besonders gut geworden, aber es hat sehr viel Spass gemacht.

Seit meiner Ankunft hier in Sydney schon ueber ein Jahr vergangen und kam ich in den Genuss, die Parade gleich 2 x miterleben zu duerfen :o)

The 03. 0f March 2007 and on the 1.3.08 the Mardi Gras Festival took place in Sydney. In the evening they had an enormous Gay - Parade here. I assume, this event is kind of similar to the german Karnival. Lots of colourful costumes, unusual behavour and every now and then some alcohol ;o)

We were pretty late and because it was already dark, my photos didn't turned out very well - but anyway it was a lot of fun.

Since my arrival here in Sydney, a year already passed by and so I was able to see the parade a second time.

St. Patrick's Day

Nur zwei Wochen spaeter wurde hier in Sydney St. Patrick's Day gefeiert, der Tag ist allerdings kein gesetzlicher Feiertag. Dazu brauche ich nicht viel sagen, der ist zuhause ja auch bekannt. Ich habe mich gruen angezogen und bin in die Stadt gefahren. Ich wuerde das "Ausnahmezustand" nennen. Iren wissen, wie man feiert.

Just two weeks later, St. Patrick's Day was celebrated, but it is not a pulic holiday. Well, I don't have to explain much, do I? It's pretty well known in Germany as well. I dressed in green and went to the city. I would call this an state of emergency. Irish people kown how to party.

Auch St. Patricks Day habe ich zum 2ten Mal hier in Sydney miterleben duerfen. Der Tag fiel auf einen Monatg und es wurde wohl schon am Sonntag kraeftig gefeiert. An dem eigentlichen Feiertag war kaum was los - soweit ich gehoert habe, ich war nicht in der Stadt.

I also was able to experience St. Patricks Day in Sydney a second time. The irish holiday was on a monday and as far as I know, the sunday before was used for celebrations. At the actual holiday there was not much on - as far as I heared, I couldn't be botherd going to the city.

75th Anniversary of the Sydney Harbour Bridge

The bridge is closed for traffic for about a day

Am naechsten Tag (18.03.2007) wurde das 75-jaehrige Bestehen der Harbour Bridge zelebriert. Noch etwas verkatert vom vorherigen Abend habe ich es aber gegen Nachmittag geschafft, mich mit Tanja und Peter, neuen Freunden, die ich auf meinem Blue Mountains Trip kennen gelernt hatte, und Sam, einem Freund von Peter, zu treffen.

The next day (18.03.2007) we had the 75th anniversary of the Harbour Bridge here in Sydney. A little bit hung over from the day before, I managed to catch up with Tanja and Peter, new friends I met on my trip to the Blue Mountains, and Sam, a friend of Peter.

Wir sind zusammen ueber die Bruecke gelaufen, die anlaesslich des Feiertages fuer PKW gesperrt wurde. Wir haben Muetzen bekommen und es wurde dramatische Musik gespielt. Es war ein sehr schoener Tag und wir haben viel gelacht. Trotz des allgemeinen Katers.

The four of us walked across the bridge, which was closed for traffic that day. Each of us got a cap and dramatic music was played. It was a great day and we laught a lot - despite the hung over.

Anzac Day

Als Großbritannien 1914 in den Ersten Weltkrieg eingriff, folgte Australien dem „Mutterland“. Australien bezahlte einen hohen Preis für diese Loyalität, 64% der 331.781 Trupps wurden verletzt oder getötet.
Doch der Erste Weltkrieg war ein bestimmender Punkt in der australischen Geschichte. Der ANZAC Day wird von vielen als der wahre National Tag (Australia Day, 26.01.) angesehen. Der ANZAC Day wird in Erinnerung an die Landung der australischen und neuseeländischen Truppen (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) in Gallipoli in der Türkei am 25sten April 1915 abgehalten. Die Truppen versuchten - ohne Erfolg - die Dardanellen zu überqueren und sich mit den Russen zusammen zu schließen. Das war die erste Schlacht, in der australische Soldaten als eine Nation gekämpft haben und, trotz des Fehlschlages, einen Ruf für Mut und Durchhaltevermögen erwarben.

When Britain entered World War I in 1914, Australia followed the „mother land“. Most Australians supported the war, but they would not accept conscription or compulsory national service.
Australia paid a very high price for this allegiance, with 64 per cent of the 331,781 troops killed or wounded. Memorials to those who fought and died are found throughout the country, ranging from the simple to the impressive such as the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. World War I was a difining moment in Australia´s history. Anzac Day, rather than Australia Day, is felt by many to be the true national day. It commemorates the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps at Gallipoli in Turkey on the 25th April 1915, for their unsuccessful attempt to cross the Dardanelles and link up with the Russians.
This was the first battle in which Australian soldiers fought as a national force and, although a failure, they gained a reputation for bravery and endurance. It is an event which many believe determined the Australian character and saw the real birth of the Australian nation.

Ich bin mit Damian, Lise und Rich zur Spit Bridge gefahren. Dort haben wir uns Kanus ausgeliehen und sind ca. eine Stunde auf dem Wasser bis nach Balmoral Beach gepaddelt. Es hat mir viel Spass gemacht, auch wenn ich etwas nass aus der Geschichte raus gekommen bin...

I went with Damian, Lise and Rich to Spit Bridge, where we hired Kayaks. In about an hour we paddled to Balmoral Beach. It was great fun, even if I got pretty wet - thanks Rich! ;o)

Danach hatten wir noch ein ueppiges Fruehstueck in der Fussgaengerzone Manlys. Gegen Mittag bin ich in die Stadt gefahren, um Susa, Carina und Ash zu treffen. Die Parade war zu dieser Zeit schon vorbei, aber es waren noch viele Leute in der Stadt und haben gefeiert. In einer Kneipe in "The Rocks" haben wir uns dann das ein oder andere Bierchen genehmigt.

After that we had a big breakfast in Manly. About noon I got home and prepared for the city, where I supposed to catch up with Susa, Carina and Ash. The Parade was over at the time I arrived in the city, but there were still lots of people celebrating. In the Rocks we enjoyed a few beers.

Queen's Birthday

Ein weiterer Feiertag war der 11.06. . Queen's Birthday. Maggie hat mir erklaert, dass die Queen eigenlich an einem anderen Tag Geburtstag hat, aber warum das jetzt ausgerechnet auf das Datum gelegt wurde, habe ich vergessen.

Another Holiday is the 11.06.. Queen's Birthday. Maggie explained to me, that the Queen actually has her birthday on a completely different day, but why the Holiday is just there, I unfortunately forgot.

Ein neuer Freund, den ich durch Susa kennen gelernt hatte, ist Andy. Andrew kommt aus der Gegend um London, lebt aber schon seit einiger Zeit hier in Sydney. Wir sind zusammen nach Parramatta gefahren und haben uns die Gegend dort angeschaut. Danach fuehrte unser Weg nach Leichhard, wo wir uns noch ein Eis genehmigten. Dann ging es wieder nach Hause.

A new friend I met through Susa is Andy. Andrew is somewhere from London, but lives quite a while here in Australia now. We went together to Parramatta. After that he took me to Leichard, where we had some ice cream. Then it was time to go home again.
