Perth und Fremantle - 05. - 11. 02. '07

Tja, und dann, vier Tage spaeter, wir haben jetzt schon den 05. 02. 2007, bestiegen wir den Flieger, der uns nach Perth bringen sollte. Gluecklicher weise fand ich dort noch ein Hostel in Northbridge, dem noerdlichen Ausgehviertel von Perth, in dem ich die naechsten Tage unterkommen konnte. In Perth selbst, habe ich nur ca. 2 Tage verbracht, einen der 6 Tage an der Westkueste nutzte ich, um den Sueden dieser Gegend zu sehen (Valley of the Giants / Tree Top Walk), einen anderen, um den noerdlichen Teil um Perth (Pinnacles / Nambung NP), zu betrachten.

Zum Wochenende dann kaufte ich mir ein Ticket nach Fremantle, wo ich bis Sonntag eine schoene Zeit verbrachte. Von dort aus ist es nicht weit bis nach Rottnest Island, wo man sich Fahrraeder ausleihen und so bequem die gesamte Insel auskundschaften kann - vorausgesetzt, man erwischt ein gutes Fahrrad und kann einen ganzen Tag auf dem Drahtesel verkraften. Rottnest ist bekannt fuer seine Quokkas (Baumkaenguruhs), die Anfangs mit Ratten verwechselt wurden, daher dann auch der Name der Insel. Uebringens ist mir dort meine zweite australische Schlage begegnet.

Well, then, another four days later, it is the fourth of Febuary, we entered the plain to Perth. Thank God, I finally found a Hostel in Northbridge, a northern suburb with a great nightlife. I slept there the following days. The hostel itself wasn't that interesting. A bit dirty and used, but I met a few nice people there, so it was worth. Unfortunately I spent just two days on sightseeing in Perth itself, one day I seized to see the south of the area (Tree Top Walk) and another one, to see the north (Yanchep NP and Pinnacles / Nambung NP).

For the following weekend I bought a ferry ticket to Fremantle, were I spent a great time till sunday. It is not far from Fremantle to Rottnest Island, were bikes can be hired to explore the small island by a quiet convenient way (as long as you get a good bike and don't mind cycling the whole day). Rottnest is famous for Quokkas (Tree Kangaroos), which were taken for rats by the first explorers of the island. So, the name of it. By the way, there I met my second australian snake.

So, und dann ging es wieder in den Flieger. "Danke Emily" fuer's Fahren und den schoenen Abend in Fremantle!

Damian war dann auch noch so nett, mich am Sydney'er Flughafen abzuholen. Er, seine Freundin Lise und ich sind dann - im stroemenden Regen - noch ein Eis an der Promenade von Coogee Beach essen gegangen und dann bin ich totmuede auf meiner Matratze in Damian's und Heath's Appartment eingeschlafen.

And again I bailed. "Thank you, Emily!" for driving and the nice evening we spent together in Fremantle.

Back in Sydney, Damian was so nice to pick me up at the airport. He, his girlfriend Lise and myself, went - in the pouring rain - to Coogee Beach having some ice cream at the promenade. After that I dropped really tired on my matress in Damo's an Heath's appartment.

Seitdem habe ich meine Zeit hier genutzt, um Bewerbungen zu schreiben und Vorstellungsgespraeche wahr zu nehmen - und natuerlich habe ich schon einige Stadtteile, Straende, Parks und Maerkte besucht.

Since that, I seized my time here in Sydney to write applications, go to interviews and - of course - I have seen a few suburbs, beaches, parks and markets, so far.

Adelaide - 31. 01. - 04. 02. '07

Blue Lake, Mt. Gambier

Frisch erholt, ging die Reise weiter Richtung Adelaide. Unser naechster Stop war Mt. Gambier, wo wir den Blue Lake betrachteten. "Blue Lake" ist ein Vulkankrater, aehnlich unserer Maare in der Eifel. Durch chemische und wetterbedingte Einfluesse, faerbt sich die Wasserfarbe azurblau. Unglaublich intensiv! Danach fuhren wir weiter durch den Coorong NP, ueber Victor Habour bis an die suedwestliche Spitze der Fleurieu Penninsula . Wir haben dort in einem unscheinbaren Ort namens Port Jerwis uebernachtet, um am naechsten Tag die Faehre nach Kangaroo Island zu nehmen.

Recovered, we departed in direction to Adelaide. Our next stop was Mt. Gambier, where we admired Blue Lake, which is similar to the german "Maare". The volcanic origin of the lake, as well as the chemical and climatical infuence make the colour of the water turn azure. Very intense!
After that, we headed off to the Coorong NP, further to Victor Harbour, and finally we reached the southwest coast of the Fleurieu Penninsula. In an inconspicous place called Port Jerwis we spent a night in the tent, to take the early ferry to Kangaroo Island the next day.

Dummerweise hatte sich keiner von uns genauer informiert und wir waren sehr ueberrascht, als uns die Dame am Ticketverkauf dann erzaehlte, dass wir evtl. nicht mit rueber koennen, weil die Faehre ausgebucht ist und das Ticket fuer Hin- und Rueckfahrt 300$ kosten soll. Wir haben es uns dann anders ueberlegt und sind ueber Hahndorf nach Adelaide gefahren, wo uns Thomas und sein "Roommate" Craig sehr lieb empfangen haben.

Stupid us, none of us was informed closer and we were really surprised, when we were told that the ferry was fully booked and the tickets ( + return) are about 300$. We changed our minds soon and decided to drive via Hahndorf to Adelaide, where Thomas and his roommate Craig welcomed us.

In Adelaide habe ich abends viel mit Craig ( leider war Thomas sehr mit seinem Studium beschaeftigt und so haben wir drei zusammen es nur ein Mal geschafft, an den Strand zu gehen. Wir hatten aber ein gute und - vor allem- recht erholsame Zeit dort!) unternommen und bin sonst die Stadt erkunden gegangen, oder habe mir die Landschaft rundherum angeschaut. Der "Murialta Falls NP" ist im Sommer leider sehr trocken und die beruehmten Wasserfaelle nur schwer zu erkennen, trotzdem konnte ich einen sehr schoenen Tag dort verbringen, vielleicht, weil ich das Glueck hatte, zwei indische Maedels kennen zu lernen. Wir waren wohl die einzigen dort in der sengenden Hitze.

In Adelaide I spent my evenings with Craig (unfortunately Thomas was very busy with his studies, so we three just made it once to the beach, but we had a good and, most of all, relaxing time there), during the day I went exploring the city or the surrounding landscape.

Unfortunately, the "Murialta Falls NP" is in summertime very dry and so it was hard to recognize the famous waterfalls. Nontheless I had a good time there, maybe because I was lucky to meet two indian girls. Probably, we were the only ones beeing so crazy and walking through the heat!

Great Ocean Road - 27. - 30. 01. '07

Am naechsten Tag ging es dann los. Die Great Ocean Road wartete auf uns! Zuerst fuehrte uns unser Weg nach Torquay und Anglesea, zwei Orten, die fuer ihre Surfer bekannt sind. Entlang der Strasse genossen wir das unglaubliche Kuesten-Panorama und landeten abends dann in einem suessen kleinen Staedtchen namens Apollo Bay. Auf einem kleinen Aussichtshuegel genehmigte ich mir dann mein Abendbrot ("Tea", laut Rhian und Demelza) und bei einem kleinen Campingplatz schlugen wir unser Zelt auf. Ich habe mich in der Stadt noch kurz umgesehen und das wunderschoene Panorama genossen (sehr romantisch!). Mit einer Gruppe aus Warrnambool bin ich dann spaeter noch mal in das heimische Pub "eingekehrt" und wir hatten viel Spass zusammen. Von hier aus noch mal viele liebe Gruesse an alle!

The next day we bailed, again. The Great Ocean Road was waiting for us to come! At first, our way took us to Torquay and Anglesea, two places, famous for surfing. Along the road we enjoyed the amazing coastal views and in the evening we reached a cute little town called Apollo Bay. On the top of a hill with a beautiful view over settlement and bay, we had dinner (as Rhian and Demelza would say: "Tea") and close to a little camping ground we put up the tent. Later that day I had a look around the place and enjoyed the romatic atmosphere. At night I joined a group of people from Warrnambool, we went to a pub and had great fun alltogether. So, from here good wishes to all of you guys!

"Twelve Apostels", Great Ocean Road

Entlang der Shipweck Coast haben wir dann auch endlich die beruehmten Kuestenformationen wie "Zwoelf Apostel", "Loch Ard Gorge" oder "London Bridge" bewundert. Interessant ist auch "The Grotto", finde ich, die eine optische Abwechslung zu den anderen Formationen darstellt. Dem Princess Hwy folgend sind wir schliesslich gegen Mittag in Warrnambool angekommen, wo wir uns einen Bungalow mit einem aelteren Paerchen aus der Gegend um Adelaide teilen konnten.

Along the Shipwreck Coast we saw famous coastal formations like "Twelf Apostels", "Loch Ard Gorge" and "London Bridge". For me, "The Grotto" was very interesting, too. It is a bit different to the other formations. Following the Pricess Highway, we reached Warrnambool at noon, where we were offered to share a bungalow with a couple from about Adelaide.

Geelong - 24. - 27. 01.'07

Bellarine Penninsula

Leider schon vier Tage spaeter haben Andy und ich uns wieder getroffen und sind nach Geelong aufgebrochen, wo wir einen Schlafplatz bei Damians Schwestern, Rhian und Demelza, sicher hatten. Von dort aus haben wir einen kleinen Ausflug zur Ballerine Penninsula gemacht und einen kleinen Strandspaziergang entlang der Kueste unternommen. Geelong ist ein kleines Staedtchen mit neuer Strandpromenade, vielen huebschen Haeuschen und einem recht interessanten Botanischen Garten. Der ganze Ort hat mich foermlich an Urlaub erinnert, vor allem, da gerade eine Segelboot-Regatta stadtfand und einige Segelboote in der Bucht ankerten.

Already four days later, Andy and I met again to head off to Geelong, where we found an accomodation at Rhian's and Demelza's place, Damian's sisters. Departing from there, we made a short trip to the Bellarine Penninsula where we had a short walk along the coastline.
Geelong is a little town with a new foreshore, lots of nice houses and a quiet interesting Botanical Garden. The whole place reminded me of holidays. Above all, there was a Sailing Regatta taking place and some of the boats had already anchored at or near the marina.

Am Australia Day, 26. 01., bin ich mit Demelza zur Marina gegangen. Der Segel-Club, dem Demelza angehoert, veranstaltete ein Fest und wir haben dort viel gefeiert! Es war ein sehr schoener Abend fuer mich. Ich habe dort einen Sued-Afrikaner (Kapstadt) getroffen und ich muss sagen, das ist bisher das angenehmste Englisch gewesen, dass ich gehoert habe.

On Australia Day, 26. 01., Demelza and I went to the Marina. Demelza is a member of the Sail Club which organized a party that weekend. We had a really good time there. I met a guy from south Africa there and I have to say that he spoke the most pleasant english I heard so far :o)

Melbourne - 20. - 24. 01. '07

Wenn ich mich richtig erinnere sind wir an diesem Tag noch bis kurz vor Melbourne gekommen. Entlang der Kueste konnen wir sogar noch eine kleine Pause am Strand machen. Abends sind wir dann in einem Vorort Melbournes gelandet. Mit Blick auf die Stadt und einem grossen Strand haben wir dann unser Lager im Sand aufgeschlagen. Diese Nacht war eine absolut neue Erfahrung fuer mich. Das bisher recht angenehme Klima hat sich rapide gewandelt und nachts um 3h mussten wir das Zelt wegen Regen und Sturm abbauen. Nach einer kurzen und unbequemen Nacht im Auto haben wir uns auf den Weg zum naechsten Hostel gemacht. Nach einer kurzen Pause dort begannen wir Sightseeing. Ich glaube an dem Tag haben wir auch George wiedergetroffen, der Muenchner aus Jindabyne.

Gluecklicher Weise konnte ich einen Kontakt zu Leanda aufzubauen. (Danke Tabea! :o) ) Leanda kommt ursprueglich aus der Gegend um Perth und arbeitet jetzt in Melbourne, sie wohnt in den "Docklands". Das ist ein altes Hafenviertel, das nach und nach modernisiert wird. Sie hat mir die Moeglichkeit geben, in ihrem Appartment (das ich am liebsten gar nicht mehr verlassen haette) unterzukommen und von dort aus die Stadt zu erkunden! Auch dafuer ein herzliches Dankeschoen! :o)

If I remember right, we arrived in Melbourne the same day. But first, we had a little break on the shore. In the evening we reached a little suburb of Melbourne. With a beautiful view to the city on a big beach we camped in the sand. This night was a completley new experiece for me. The really nice klimate - so far - changed rapidly and at 3am we had to put down the tent beacause of rain and storm. After a short and uncomfortable night in the car we made our way to the next hostel. There we had a short break and then we headed off to some sightseeing. I think, we met George, the german guy from Jindabyne, again.

Fortunately I got in contact with Leanda (Thanks Tabea for giving me her contact details! :o) ) Leanda is from somewhere around Perth, but she works in Melbourne now. There, she lives in a place called "Docklands", which is an old harbour area and in process of modernisation. Leanda offered me to stay at her place, which I did! (and I hardly couldn't leave again!). From there it was a short way to the city centre. For that I would like to say "Thanks you so much, Leada!".

In der Naehe der Docklands befindet sich der TelstraDome, ein Oval. Ovals sind hier die Cricket-Plaetze. Mit der City Circle Tram, einer kostenlosen Bahn, rund um das Stadtzentrum, konnte man die wichtigsten Sehenswuerdigkeiten gut erreichen. So zum Beispiel: Parlament, China Town, Melbourne Museum, Queen Victoria Market (neuer Hut, Rock und passende Strickjacke), Flinders Station und Federation Square. Ausserdem habe ich mir den Botanischen Garten, mit King's Domain und Shrine of Remembrance und LaTrobe's Cottage angeschaut. Auf dem Weg zurueck in die Stadt war es praktisch unumgaenglich an der Rod Laver Arena vorbei zukommen. Das Gelaende war zur Zeit der Australian Open natuerlich sehr gut besucht.

Close to the Docklands is the TelstraDome located, an Oval. "Oval" is the name for Cricket ( - and other sport -) fields. The City Circle Tram, a free Railwayline, which goes around the city centre, makes it easy to reach the most popular objects of interest. For example: Parliament, China Town, Melbourne Museum, Queen Victoria Market (new hat, skirt, cardigan), Flinders Station and Federation Square.

Einen der schoensten Plaetze findet man meiner Meinung nach an der Southbank Promenade, die suedlich des Yarra Rivers zwischen Crown Casino und Concert Hall entlang fuehrt.

The Prom

Wir hatten noch einen netten Abend zusammen und am naechten Morgen sind Andy und ich mit einem wunderbaren australischen Fruehstueck verwoehnt worden. Wir haben den Tag dort langsam angehen lassen und sind gegen Mittag Richtung "Prom" aufgebrochen. Da wir schon recht spaet und unter ein wenig Zeitdruck waren, haben wir nur eine kleine Tour zu Beginn des Parks gemacht. Ich hatte dort meine erste Begegnung mit einer Schlage (wir haben uns beide erschreckt! - die Schlage war aber schnell als ich, also leider kein Foto...) und einem Echidna gemacht. Ein Schwarm Kakadus hat mich davon ueberzeugt, dass das zwar sehr schoene Voegel sind, aber deren Geraeuschkulisse ist unertraeglich!

We had a nice evening together and the next morning Andy and I were spoiled with a beautiful australian breakfast. Getting slowly into the day we decided to head off to the "Prom" about noon. We were a bit late though and under pressure of time, that is why we just did a small tour at the entrance to the park. There I had my first contact with an australian snake (we both were a bit scared, I suppose, and it was so quick, so I unfortunately didn't take a picture...) and e echidna. A swarm cocatoos convinced me, they are nice birds, but they make an intollerably sound!

Andy und ich sind dann auch nach einem langen Tag im Auto und erdrueckender Schwuele bis Albury gefahren. Dort haben uns eine freundliche Australierin und ihre Familie eine Unterkunft spendiert! Unglaublich, diese Australier! Hayley ist uebrigens selbst viel gereist und hat mich aufgrund des "Lonley Planet"s in meiner Hand angesprochen. Wir haben uns schon ein paar Mails geschrieben und ich hoffe, noch weiterhin mit ihr in Kontakt bleiben zu koennen. Der Abend in Albury mit Hayley und ihren Freunden war sehr lustig und wir haben uns bei "Parma Chicken" und Karaoke sehr amuesiert!

Andi and I arrived after a long and humid day in Albury. There a friendly australian and her family offered us an accomadation at their place. Incredible, these australians. Hayley travelled a lot by herself and made friends with me because of the "Loneley Planet" in my hand. Till now, we wrote a few mails and I hope, I will stay in contact with her. The evening with Hayley and friends of her's was really great and we had lots of fun with "Parma Chicken" and karaoke!

Am naechsten Tag haben Andy und ich uns noch ein wenig erholt und die Stadt erkundet - und dann ging es wieder weiter. Wir sind die Great Alpine Road ueber Bright, ein kleines Bergdoerfchen mit sehr idyllischem Charakter, und Omeo bis nach Swifts Creek gekommen. Dann war die Strasse wieder wegen Braenden gesperrt. Dummerweise haben wir die Hinweisschilder zu spaet bemerkt, aber nach einer weiteren Nacht auf einem kleinen Campingplatz (Swifts Creek) mit recht grossen heimischen Insekten (das Licht war die Nacht ueber im Toilettengebaeude an, der naechste Morgen war ein kleines Abenteuer dort :o) ) sind wir sicher in einem Konvoi durch das gefaerdete Gebiet geleitet worden. Hier waere dann zu sagen: "Thank you firefighters!" (solche Schilder findet man in vielen Gegenden hier. Die Leute machen diese Arbeit meistens ehrenamtlich). Wir sind danach recht zuegig voran gekommen und abends wollten wir unser Lager dann irgendwo in Naehe der Kueste und des "Proms" (Wilsons Promontory National Park) aufschlagen. Hunger und Durst haben uns dann in einen kleinen Pub in Toora getrieben. Dort lernten wir dann Kody und Pamela kennen, die uns auch wieder einen Schlafplatz angeboten haben. Diesen haben wir dankend angenommen! Noch mal vielen Dank euch beiden!

The next day Andy and I spent some time in the city with shopping and relaxing in the park along Murray River - then we went on again. We drove along the Great Alpine Road through Bright, a very tiny and idyllic place in the mountains, and further to Omeo and Swifts Creek. Till there, the road was closed again because of bushfires. Unfortunately we realized too late, that there were warning signs, but after another night at a camping ground (Swifts Creek) with really big native insects (the lights in the bathroom were left on, so the next morning there turned into a little adventure), we were able to be guarded in a convoi through this area. Here, I would like to say: "Thank you firefighters!" (we found these signs in lots of places, these poeple do this work most of the time voluntarily!). After that, we went ahead very quickly and so we decided to put up our tent somewhere close to the "Prom" (Wilsons Promontory National Park). Driven by hunger and thirst, we stopped in a little pub in Toora. There we met Kody and Pamela, who offered us to stay at their place. Thankfully we accepted! So, once again to the both of you: Thank s a lot!
